Racking Wine

Is it always necessary?

Some wines we rack, others we don't. Typically we only rack wines that have produced a lot of sediment in the primary. If we primary in a bucket... we always rack one time at 1.010.

Ive only ever done one wine kit. And it said that it wasnt necessary to rack into a secondary ( assuming thats what you mean)
it cleared very well. It sat in primary for about three months (december until march/april)

my grandpa makes alot of wine from some vines he has out back and he never uses a "Secondary" ... i dont even think he knows what it means lol

as a matter of fact he doesnt even use a carboy or airlock. he has 5 gallon crocks that are fully open on top, takes a towel and lays it over them and puts a dinner play on top. then the best part is that he uses an old pillow case as a filter LMAO

Once a beer or wine has fermented out I think its difficult for nearly any bacteria or wild yeasts to cause an infection, so your Grandpa's pillow case probably doesn't hurt anything and I'm sure he washes it so its probably just the idea of it that sounds funky.
